In September 2018, California Governor Jerry Brown signed Senate Bill 212, the first state law in the nation requiring producers of medications and sharps to design, operate and fund a safe and convenient collection program for both home generated needles and unused medications. The Extended Producer Responsibility legislation was the result of unsuccessful efforts to work with the pharmaceutical industry on issues regarding the disposal of unused medications. Subsequently, a number of local safe medicine disposal ordinances were developed throughout the state which spurred the development of the proposed statewide legislation SB 212. This presentation will address how the adoption of SB 212 will affect the City's current Safe Medicine Disposal Program and discuss interim measures prior to full implementation of the new extended producer responsibility requirements. The Board may discuss this item and give direction to staff. | | |
