GROUNDWATER SUSTAINABILITY AGENCY FORMATION UPDATE (Continued from the October 25, 2016, Regular Meeting.)
The Santa Rosa Plain groundwater sub-basin covers an area of approximately 80,000 acres and the majority of the City of Santa Rosa overlies the sub-basin. The 2014 Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA) provides a framework for sustainable management of groundwater supplies by local agencies and requires local agencies with land use, water supply or water management authorities to form Groundwater Sustainability Agencies (GSA) by mid-2017. In Sonoma County three groundwater basins, the Santa Rosa Plain, Petaluma, and Sonoma Valley basins, are required to comply with SGMA.
In the Santa Rosa Plain, staff of Santa Rosa Water along with staff from other GSA-eligible entities have begun meeting to discuss options for forming the GSA for the Santa Rosa Plain Sub-basin.
