REDISTRICTING PROCESS: DECENNIAL REVIEW OF COUNCIL MEMBER DISTRICT BOUNDARIES
The Fair and Inclusive Redistricting for Municipalities and Political Subdivisions (FAIR MAPS) Act, requires cities and counties to engage communities in the redistricting process. Cities with district-based elections are required to update (“redistrict”) the district boundaries every ten years, following the receipt of updated population data from each federal decennial census. Santa Rosa is required to redistrict the Council district boundaries prior to the next City Council election in 2022.
Santa Rosa has contracted with Redistricting Partners, LLC, to assist the City in the redistricting process, including working within existing state and federal voting rights laws, the Fair Maps Act and new California statutes on redistricting for cities, and utilizing traditional redistricting criteria, borne out of state and local laws, caselaw, and best practices.
